MUD Jeans are cut and sewn by Yousstex International. The factory is located in Touza, a rural area in North Eastern Tunisia. With 550 employees the factory is quite small for a garment manufacturer and MUD shares that it has a family vibe.
Dion Vijgeboom, product manager at MUD, visits the Yousstex factory every few months to ensure quality working conditions. He has built a good relationship with the factory owner, Mr. Habib, and any issues that arise can be discussed in an open and productive manner. Labourers work 8 hours a day, 5.5 days a week and get three weeks paid leave. The factory is safe and appropriately air-conditioned/ heated with workers reporting that they are paid fairly and on time. Free medical care and transportation are also provided.
With 400 women working at the factory, Yousstex International is a place of female empowerment. This is reflected in Yousstex’s union representatives, which are 70% women.
Planet
Using recycled cotton reduces the amount of virgin cotton needed to make a pair of jeans. 1kg of Recover recycled cotton saves up to 14,740 litres of water, 23kg of CO2 emissions, and 10.5m2 of land use.
Organic virgin cotton protects the environment and health of farmers from the damaging intensive fertilisers and pesticides conventionally used.
The major suppliers involved in the production of these jeans all have wastewater treatment plans in place.
MUD is using innovative technology to produce the different finishes on their jeans that either reduce or eliminate the amount of damage done to the garment, the water, energy, chemicals, and/or tough manual labour used in comparison to conventional finishing processes.
MUD Jeans is a circular brand - this means they aim to keep fabric in use for as long as possible by repairing, repurposing and recycling the jeans they make. You can read more about fashion and the circular economy here.
