Description
Harry Dennis, a marine biologist and Gavin Parker an environmental campaigner are living out the proverb ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’. The most common plastic found in our oceans isn’t the infamous straw but discarded fishing gear. Around the world, fishing communities often lack the means to responsibly dispose of worn-out nets. Harry and Gavin’s lightbulb moment came when they discovered that these nets could provide the perfect raw material for premium sunglass frames.
Droskyn is a contemporary hexagonal frame with geometric features inspired by the angular rocky sea cliffs of Droskyn Point in Cornwall. This frame complements a variety of face shapes and sizes.
Fitted with premium Barberini mineral glass lenses, these shades deliver outstanding optical clarity and full UV protection. This kind of lens quality is typically found in sunglasses at two to three times the price.
The spindrift colour is inspired by the spray the wind blows off waves.

People
All Waterhaul sunglasses are made in Northern Italy by a family run business employing experienced craftspeople. The relative proximity to Waterhaul’s UK base has allowed for a close relationship to be built, which has been important to Waterhaul.
Waterhaul expects all suppliers to send them their Code of Conduct before they begin working together. This year Warehaul are working towards B-Corp certification and they expect this to provide them further opportunities to develop their supply chain policies.
Planet
Waterhaul frames are made from Traceable Marine Plastic which is collected directly from the UK coastline and fishing communities. Waterhaul’s mission is to tackle the issue of ghost gear.
Lost or discarded fishing gear AKA 'ghost gear' is the most abundant form of macro-plastic in the ocean, and the problem is estimated to increase by 640,000 tonnes every year.
This fishing gear is also the most lethal form of plastic to marine life. Lost in the ocean, their function to entangle marine life continues. Constructed from high-quality plastics, these nets can keep on catching for over 500 years, unless removed.
The Waterhaul team are now pioneering the recovery of discarded fishing gear around the UK. The majority of gear is currently collected in Cornwall and Devon but a scheme to assist in preventing gear loss at source is being developed, alongside a port based pilot scheme in Pembrokeshire.
Waterhaul lenses are made from mineral glass. Glass is infinitely recyclable, and doesn't produce microplastics when cut to shape. Waterhaul reports that their hardened, polarised lenses are more scratch resistant than any form of plastic lens, even those with ‘anti-scratch’ coatings’ by a huge margin. Given that glass and sand are both composed of silica, this makes sense!
Waterhaul shares that recycling plastics is very carbon-efficient, with their recycled polymer having around 15% of the CO2 footprint of virgin polymers. However, despite using best-practice at all stages of the production process, there are inevitable costs associated with manufacture, with the largest being transportation. To address this, Waterhaul uses carbon offset transport methods for every movement from material collection to final product.
As well as the above, Waterhaul have worked closely with their Italian manufacturing partner to implement circular principles and sustainable practice at all stages of the supply chain - including recycling all of their waste / reject material and conducting a single-use plastics audit to eliminate all usage.
