Description
Yarmouth Stores have manufactured oilskin clothing for well over 100 years, originally the go to workwear for fishermen, the merchant navy, agricultural workers and miners. This recreation uses a modern lightweight waxed cotton produced in Dundee by one of Britain’s oldest wax cloth mills resulting in an emulsified wax finish cloth that is lightweight, breathable and weather repellent.

People
Yarmouth Oilskins make their collections in house. They employ a team of skilled craftspeople, many of whom have been with them for decades. It is a family like atmosphere with everyone being celebrated for what they bring to the team. The team have been designing and manufacturing quality workwear garments at the same site for over 100 years!
Yarmouth are proud to be working with British suppliers and manufacturers where possible. Their fabrics are sourced in the UK, mostly from mills in Yorkshire and Lancashire.
Planet
Waxed cotton is cotton which has been treated with a wax coating to produce a fabric which has water repellent properties. The wax used in these smocks are petroleum jelly and paraffin waxes which are waste products from cracking crude oil to make fuels such as gasoline. The processes used to apply the waxes to a cotton fabric are also low impact, meaning we do less damage to the environment than many established manufacturing methods.
Unlike synthetic man-made coatings, this wax is fully biodegradable can be regularly reproofed to maintain performance for many years, making them uniquely sustainable.
Areas for development
Brothers We Stand would like to see Yarmouth Oilskins and their partners consider the use of BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) or GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified cotton.
