Carbon footprint
We have identified the highest carbon emissions linked to our business to come from the production of the clothes sold on our marketplace. This includes material production, material processing, and garment manufacturing. Research from McKinsey suggests more than 70% of a garments carbon footprint comes from these areas.
We have a three pronged approach to reducing our carbon footprint.
1. We sell clothes that are crafted to last and actively promote a narrative of shopping ‘less and better’. We believe this can drive the biggest overall reduction in carbon emissions.
2. To list on Brothers We Stand brands must have a standout positive impact on humans and/or nature. This gives us a framework to only sell brands with a strong ethical ethos. These are the kind of brands who take steps to reduce their carbon footprint. When a brand has a notable initiative we share it in our 'Look behind' sections on product pages. Examples include but are not limited to:
- Using lower input raw materials such as organic cotton.
- Sourcing raw materials in the same geographic region as production to reduce carbon miles.
- Working with factories that get all or a percentage of their energy from renewable energy.
- We also have a policy of zero polyester in non-swimwear products which reduces the use of fossil fuel based material inputs.
3. We only ship to the UK and do not ship globally. Instead we encourage individuals to support the ethical clothing companies in their regions of the world in order to reduce the emissions associated with global e-commerce deliveries.
As a small, independently run business we do not have the resources to measure and report our carbon emissions. But we believe through the actions listed listed above we model a path forward for the fashion industry to reduce its carbon footprint.
