People

MUD Jeans are cut and sewn by Yousstex International. The factory is located in Touza, a rural area in North Eastern Tunisia. With 550 employees the factory is quite small for a garment manufacturer and MUD shares that it has a family vibe.

Dion Vijgeboom, product manager at MUD, visits the Yousstex factory every few months to ensure quality working conditions. He has built a good relationship with the factory owner, Mr. Habib, and any issues that arise can be discussed in an open and productive manner. Labourers work 8 hours a day, 5.5 days a week and get three weeks paid leave. The factory is safe and appropriately air-conditioned/ heated with workers reporting that they are paid fairly and on time. Free medical care and transportation are also provided.

With 400 women working at the factory, Yousstex International is a place of female empowerment. This is reflected in Yousstex’s union representatives, which are 70% women.

Mud Jeans denim fabric is sourced from Royo in Spain. Royo has a strong reputation for embedding social and environmental goals in all their supply chain relationships. Royo have collaborated with Recover to create a denim upcycling programme. Recover turn textile waste into quality recycled yarn, which Royo then dyes and weaves into denim fabric.

Planet

MUD are leading the way creating a long lasting circular and organic jean.

The Daily Dunn contains TENCEL™ Lyocell x REFIBRA™. This innovative fibre is made with a minimum of 30% recycled material, which is sourced from pre-and post-consumer cotton scraps. The remaining content of the fibre is wood pulp sourced from sustainably managed forests and manufactured using a certified low impact process.

In addition to the TENCEL™ Lyocell x REFIBRA™ fibres, the Daily Dunn is made with 25% pre-consumer recycled cotton and 21% post-consumer recycled cotton.

Using recycled cotton reduces the amount of virgin cotton needed to make a pair of jeans. 1kg of Recover recycled cotton saves up to 14,740 litres of water, 23kg of CO2 emissions, and 10.5m2 of land use.

The virgin cotton used is organic, helping farmers escape the health risks and financial burden of toxic chemicals involved in conventional cotton production. It also helps wider communities by maintaining (rather than draining) the local water supply and keeping it clean.

Unique printed pocket patch avoids the need for a leather or faux leather patch.

Brothers We Stand has received evidence that the major suppliers involved in the production of these jeans all have wastewater treatment plans in place.

Mud is using innovative technology to produce the different finishes on their jeans that either reduce or eliminate the amount of damage done to the garment, the water, energy, chemicals, and/or tough Shopify labour used in comparison to conventional finishing processes.

Mud Jeans is a circular brand - this means they aim to keep fabric in use for as long as possible by repairing, repurposing and recycling the jeans they make. MUD’s jeans are currently made of 40% post-consumer recycled cotton but dream that one day it will be 100%. You can read more about fashion and the circular economy here.
